Atlanta's "tourist traps" and attractions for newcomers

atlanta-office

Atlanta, The city that famously held the 1996 summer Olympic games, which will forever be one of the greatest honors a city can have. People here take it for granted that the biggest world event was hosted right here in their backyards. Besides the Summer Olympic Games, Atlanta has multiple attractions for people to visit every day such as the Georgia aquarium, the Fox theatre, Phillips Arena, and Lake lanier to keep you entertained. In addition to that, Atlanta also is the home of a lot of famous foods and drinks. The coca cola headquarters, the first waffle house, Cookout, and the Varsity are all trademarks of this great city. Atlanta is also unique because it is very accepting towards racial diversity and homosexuality so nobody should ever feel afraid to express themselves at any time here!

What is Atlanta known for? Hip-hop. Atlanta is the home of some of the biggest rappers in today's modern era. Rappers such as Young thug, Future, and lil yachty were all born in Atlanta and perform concerts that keep the environment in this city electric.Nightlife is one of Atlanta's primary tourism attractions. From concerts, to restaurants, to nightclubs, Atlanta features some of the top places for entertainment. There's nothing like catching a concert in one of Atlanta's outdoor venues. Opened in 1989, Aaron's amphitheater is one of Atlanta's best venues for concerts. The amphitheater is located approximately 4 miles south of downtown Atlanta, at the Lakewood Fairgrounds. It was designed to offer a state-of-the-art musical experience for both music fans and artists. The venue was built specifically for popular music. With its huge capacity of 19,000, Aaron's Amphitheater is an ideal place for some of the nation's most popular artists to perform. "Spanning 75 beautiful, wooded acres, Lakewood Amphitheater (formerly named Aaron's Amphitheatre at Lakewood) is with little doubt the finest music venue in all of Atlanta." (thelakewoodampitheatre.com)Along with Aaron's, Atlanta features another popular site for concerts, The Tabernacle. The Tabernacle has been a venue for notable acts, including Guns N' Roses, The Black Crowes, Adele, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Robbie Williams, Alice in Chains, Bob Dylan, Prince & The New Power Generation, The 1975 and Atlanta's own Mastodon, among others. But these two venues aren't all Atlanta has to offer. Atlanta includes over 70 other venues, some of which include nightclubs and bars as well as hosting concerts. The Buckhead bars are arguably Atlanta's finest nightlife attractions. Buckhead's nightlife is almost like its own world of fun for young adults, From Churchills to Parkbench, Buckhead includes over 100 bars for anyone to enjoy. "In bar after bar . . . partiers find variety in the village . . . There are 100 bars and restaurants within 2 1/2 blocks of the intersection of Peachtree Road and East Paces Ferry" (Atlanta Journal-Constitution). The epicenter of excitement in Atlanta are the nightclubs in Buckhead, and the place to go for a night in the city's flashiest nightspots. As far as finding the best nightclubs in Buckhead, that's for you to decide. As far as restaurants go, Atlanta has every option you could think of. From, American-style cuisines, to steakhouses, to seafood to Southern food, Atlanta has it all while incorporating creative concepts as well. Such as the Sun Dial restaurant which is one of Atlanta's most luxurious places giving customers the illustrious view of the city. This restaurant is one of the most popular tourist attractions and places couples go to celebrate anniversaries. The sun-dial is one of the most unique and urban styles of entertainment incorporated eating you can visit in Atlanta.

According to the AJC, Atlanta is also exploding in the film business. Spending approximately 1.7 billion dollars on 248 projects, Atlanta has had a 500% increase since 2008. Filming things such as The Walking dead and The hunger games, I believe that Atlanta will soon be as entertainment based as Los Angeles.

For people that like to experience things from where they originated, Atlanta is the place for you. Film and music are not the only things that are prevalent in this city. Atlanta has lots of tourist attractions such as The high museum of art, Martin Luther King Jr. national historic site, the CNN centre, the world of coke, the Oakland cemetery, and underground Atlanta. All these historical trademarks of Atlanta keep our history strong. Thanks to the city's small size, tourists can take a MARTA train ride, and a half a mile walk and you are at about any tourist attraction in the city.

After visiting all these sights, most people are ready to settle down somewhere and grab a bite to eat. There is a waffle house on just about every corner of this city. Waffle house is a traditional style restaurant that serves anything from waffles to hamburgers to even steak 24 hours a day. I cannot even tell you the number of times I have been to waffle house personally after coming home from a concert, sporting event, or party. With a variety of options served at all times, at a very fair price, Waffle house is always a favored spot to eat at in Atlanta. Even though Waffle house is enjoyed by most people, some people would prefer a drive-through option. Fortunately, Atlanta is also the home of the restaurants Cookout and The Varsity. Cookout is known for their cookout tray which includes an entree 2 sides, and a drink all for 5 bucks. Cookout is the cheapest way to obtain a full stomach and is also a convenient source of late night food just like waffle house is, and serves customers as late as 4 in the morning. The Varsity, on the other hand, is also a great place for burgers, fries, chili dogs, etc. The varsity is the real definition of "true to Atlanta" because they only have 7 restaurants all located in the metro Atlanta area. The varsity is also known because of their traditional style of serving food. Often when you walk into Cookout, cashiers and fry cooks will be screaming orders back and forth to each other. The disorganized crowded restaurant makes it a unique and historic place for fast food in Atlanta.

Entertainment in Atlanta is not just for adults. Kids can enjoy many different places in this city as well. What better way to enjoy your day than going to see some animals. Downtown Atlanta's Georgia Aquarium is ranked 4.3 stars out of 5 from 1,541 google reviews. The newly renovated 21st-century aquarium contains several thousand species of sea creatures that cover over 13 acres of land. The Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere with 10 million gallons of fresh and marine water and tens of thousands of animals ranging from sharks to starfish. The Georgia Aquarium also offers food, so you don't have to leave the aquarium to grab a bite to eat. The gift shops at Georgia Aquarium also offer cool shirts, souvenirs, and paintings that kids can take home and remember for the rest of their lives. The Atlanta zoo also is another place kids can enjoy Atlanta entertainment. The Atlanta zoo is also rated 4.3 stars out of 5 on google reviews and is 1 of 4 zoos in the nation that are still carrying pandas. The Atlanta zoo covers an astounding 40 acres, which gives energetic kids limitless options to run, explore, and learn interesting facts about different species of animal life.

With the growth of Atlanta's schools and population, this city is becoming a place of great opportunity. While students are attending schools such as Georgia Tech or Georgia State to get their degrees, students can also immediately accumulate jobs or internships that build their resumé and can find access to many opportunities in Atlanta that people from other schools cannot find. In fact, Forbes rates Atlanta the third best city for young entrepreneurs in the nation. Another reason why Atlanta is rapidly growing is because of their carefree acceptance of all types of people. With a high percentage of homosexuals, Atlanta is one of the most diverse places on the planet. High diversity encourages different views on life and education, and can lead to a very foreseeable and prospering future.

In conclusion, Atlanta's options are limitless and is more than just a "tourist trap". In Atlanta, there is no end to the different attraction and entertainment sources this city holds for both kids and adults. From the delicious affordable foods to the different historical landmarks, people are starting to realize the potential of this beautiful city.

This is the second half of the main page. This advertisement page shows when all the Rollergirls events are and these events raise money for their programs. Join our rec league is written in big letters to grab the attention of those who are visiting their site so they can recruit more athletes

This is a picture of some of the Atlanta Rollergirls. I believe these women are some of the first Rollergirls on the Atlanta team. These Rollergirls represent everything they stand for and are the founding mothers of this sport.

This is the twitter page for the Atlanta Rollergirls club. They have almost 8000 followers and they are growing more rapidly every day. Atlanta Rollergirls are attempting to become a sport and have lots of fans and followers and they are going to be a very promising sport in the near future.

WFTDAA

Artifact number 2 is this picture of the WFTDA. WFTDA is an acronym for women's flat track derby association, and this picture is basically everything the website and the sport stands for. Women have been shunned from playing sports throughout life and the WFTDA is trying to change that slowly but surely.

This is the main page of the Rollergirls website and is used to navigate yourself to all the other subcategories. The colors are red and black, and the website is pretty simple to navigate, all you have to do is just hover over one of the categories and a drop down menu will pop up.

My digital built environment description is on the website http://www.atlantarollergirls.com. This website was unique to me because I did not know anything about this organization until I visited the website. The Atlanta Rollergirls, a founding member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), took shape in November 2004.

The woman's flat hat track derby association is the international governing body for the sport of women's flat track roller derby, and a membership organization for leagues to collaborate and network. The mission of the WFTDA is to support sportsmanship, athletic ability, and goodwill among member leagues.

The way the website is setup with a home page with a bunch of subcategories. The sub-categories are the blog section, the about page, the schedule, the team, the shopping site, training, recruitment, sponsors, media, and contact.Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 2.56.20 PM

The websites main colors are black and red, which are also the same colors of the team. Also, most sports teams in Atlanta also wear red such as the Falcons, Braves and even the new upcoming soccer team Atlanta united. Most of the front page is focused on advertising events. The Atlanta Rollergirls are still an upcoming team and are trying to recruit more and more people every single day.

The Rollergirls are on multiple social media apps such as facebook, twitter, and Youtube. There is no doubt that the population of people that are interested in Rollergirls is growing. The Rollergirls have almost 8000 followers on twitter, almost 19,000 likes on facebook, and 500 subscribers on youtube.

Because I am not a female and cannot really look into any of the other things on the page such as training, events, etc. I decided to keep my focus on the first sub-category, the blog.

The blog on this website is not like most blogs you see nowadays that people read. Most blogs usually share advice, personal experiences, or events that they would like to share with the world. However on this blog, I felt as if I was reading a background story about different Rollergirls and the key roles they play to make Rollergirls a successful sport. Rollergirls are accepting to anybody no matter what your disabilities or capabilities are.  On the most recent blog there is a post about a woman who is nicknamed "Hurtie Gertie" who is a medical editors for a medical communications company that specializes in oncology/hematology. Besides talking about herself, the blog post highlights things such as daily activities and accomplishments.

In conclusion, the Atlanta Rollergirls is a great idea and is going to revolutionize women's sports in years to come. However, their website set-up is quite confusing and I am still confused about the actual sport itself. For future goals, the Rollergirls should focus on adding rulebooks, gameplay footage, and workout plans. Until the Rollergirls do this, I cannot consider them an actual team sport because they seem to be only focused on recruitment and donations. However, the Rollergirls have a lot of support and donations coming through from many people all over the state, and I believe it will be a popular sport in the near future.

I did my interior built environment description on the Phillips arena. Phillips arena is where the Atlanta Hawks play basketball, however, many huge artists will perform their music at Phillips  because of the large amounts of seating.

When I first entered the proximity of the Phillips arena the first thing I saw was a massive statue of a basketball player. To my surprise, it was a statue of Jacques Dominique "Nique" Wilkins. The statue basically is there in an honor of all the great things he has done for the hawks. Multiple mind-boggling statistics were engraved under his feet. Wilkins was the Hawks all-time leading scorer, nine-time NBA all-star, seven-time all NBA player, Two-time NBA slam dunk champion and now no. 21 is retired because of his legendary status. Dominique is without a doubt one of Atlanta's greatest athletes, and will be remembered for a long time.

When I finished with the statue I took  a right turn towards the entrance and came to these stairs that led me to a revolving door. The handles were cold and looked old due to the paint that was chipping away. The stairs were also angled in a weird way instead of just straight up and down.

IMG_1340-2-x0xf67

As i turned the revolving doors, this was the first thing I saw as soon as I walked into the building. Phillips Arena's food court provides a wide range of options to their customers for food. The big building had a high ceiling and there were hundreds of people everywhere getting food and shopping at multiple at multiple stores.

IMG_1349

As I was relaxing and taking in the atmosphere of the built enviroment while obviously enjoying my Chik-Fil-A, something caught my attention. Interestingly in the food court, they had something that I had never noticed previously. There were flags aligned back to back hanging from the ceiling. This was cool to me because showcasing other countries flags mean you support cultural diversity, and that is what we stand for here at Georgia State.

IMG_1495

I was not able to get access that day into the arena due to security, but I was recently at the hawks game 2 playoff game against the Celtics. The game was crowded with fans supporting both Boston and Atlanta. Fans were all wearing cool jerseys of players such as Paul Millsap, Dennis Schroder, and Jeff Teague. With an astounding attendance of 18,000, people were cheering together at once and I could barely even hear myself think. Frustrated drunk Celtics fans constantly swore because the hawks were running them off the court. At halftime, cheerleaders threw out shirts to the crowd, and fans were toppling over each other to try to catch them. The hawks ended up winning by a solid 20 points, and went 2-0 in the series.

In conclusion Phillips arena will forever be the greatest place ever, and the home of the Atlanta Hawks. The enthusiasm and affection the crowd showed to the players is indescribable, and the enviroment is always electric. Nobody is ever sad when they are at a hawks game (until they have to buy expensive stadium food).
